Wedding Accidents Most Likely to Cause an Insurance Claimlifestages // on Thursday June 11, 2015
The heat of the summer means the height of wedding season. You may find your church hosting multiple weddings throughout the year, and while these events are a celebration of marriage filled with good times, they also create risky situations that could lead to an insurance claim.
For each wedding held at your church, there are a number of things you should watch out for as families are planning, decorating and preparing. In fact, it is a good idea to see that someone from the church is included in these activities. Placing a watchful eye on wedding preparation can make the difference in preventing a claim.
The most common insurance claims associated with weddings are slips, trips or falls and accidental fires. Therefore, here are three major items to look at:
- Music and Sound Equipment – Music is an essential element to all parts of a wedding. Whether your church is hosting the ceremony or both the ceremony and reception, inspect the areas around the music and sound equipment. Check to see any trip hazards, such as cords or wires, are adequately covered or away from a walking path. Using bright colored tape to secure these items also will help alert individuals of the hazard.
- Entrances and Exits – Another frequent area that causes trips and falls are building entrances and exits. For all parties involved, a wedding day can be hectic and stressful, and without proper care, you may find your guests tripping over unmaintained doorways more than their to-do lists. These hazards require more attention in terms of fixing and maintaining, so it is important to inspect these locations regularly, and make any necessary repairs.
- Candles – Often a part of wedding décor or ritual in a ceremony, candles can be an important element to a wedding. Lack of care and precaution with candles could lead to a wedding party’s worst nightmare – a call to the fire department. When using candles, see that they are placed in a secure holder and will not easily fall over. Additionally, make sure they are out of reach for children and not located near drapes, curtains or any other material that could catch fire. And, extinguish any lit objects before leaving the room.
A wedding is a big important event in many individuals’ lives. A successful, problem-free wedding day is a victory not only for the families involved, but also for your organization. Adequate risk management and safety precautions can create a claim-free day, which is even better for the church.
